Take a Trip Back in Time: Visit the Seven Medieval Wonders of the World

Posted by admin On February - 10 - 2011Comments Off

You may have known about the modern world wonders and even the ancient world wonders, but nothing makes the imagination run wild more than by visiting these shocking and unparalleled sites. These seven medieval wonders include Stonehenge, the Colosseum, the Catacombs, the Great Wall of China, the Porcelain Tower, the Hagia Sophia and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. As you make your way to visit each of these unique destinations, always make sure you take the time out to compare travel insurance rates as you want to be protected against any injuries, illnesses or change in plans.

Stonehenge

The most recognisable medieval wonder in England is certainly Stonehenge which was garnered quite a mystery and power at this location. Some believe these stones were common grounds for a temple while others believe it was an ancient burial ground. Regardless of its purpose, most visitors are struck with amazement upon seeing these stones.

The Colosseum

If only there were video recorders during the times of the Colosseum! Besides its immense structure, some of the greatest shows in the world during the medieval period were performed at this destination. The Colosseum is the quintessential monument and essence of ancient Roman culture and architecture.

The Catacombs

The Catacombs is an ancient burial site where bodies were lowered by a rope . There are benches by the burial site, a banquet hall, a staircase with sculptures and pillars all around and mixture of Roman, Greek and Egyptian art and architecture.

The Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China is an extraordinary man made medieval wonder that was once coined to be so large that you could see it from outer space. The structure was originally built to protect China from the outside world. Single walls were erected and later during the Qin Dynasty the walls were connected into one, creating the inspiring wall as we know it today.

The Porcelain Tower

The Porcelain Tower is located in Nanjing, China. It rose 260 feet in the air and was deemed the essence of the East and coined the Temple of Gratitude. There are white porcelain bricks that glitter from the Earth’s bright sun rays and decorated with colourful porcelain panels with various images of flowers, landscapes, bamboo and animals.

The Hagia Sophia

The Hagia Sophia is one of the treasured Muslim mosques. However, the beauty lies in the fact that there are three grand religions residing in this mosque: Christianity, Judaism and Islam. This sought after tourist destination and medieval world wonder is now open as a museum.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa

While most buildings are erected straight, the Leaning Tower of Pisa slants a tad bit over the vertical line. The instability of the ground below has caused the tower to shift its access and slightly incline. This monument was treasured in the Tuscan Romanesque period and cherished in the hearts of everyone who comes to see it.
